After careful consideration and much discussion Drouin Devils Committee have made the difficult decision to withdraw from the WDABA modified Winter Season for the following reasons;
- Lack of interest; we emailed over 400 past and present players and less than 10% indicated they would be interested in returning to basketball for the modified program, meaning we only had enough numbers to put in 2 teams
-Concerns for safety; with only one spectator allowed per player many parents would by necessity need to drop off and pick up players who would be required to wait outside the venue when not actually playing due to restrictions. This presents safety issues particularly in Drouin where external lighting is inadequate and supervision cannot be provided.
-Covid 19 transmission; with Pakenham and the Cardinia Shire being identified as hotspots, and many players travelling from these areas, the precautions in place do not eliminate risk of transmission
-Quality of the season
With reduced numbers it is likely that there will not be grades within age groups, that is A grade will play against B grade which as we have seen in past seasons, is extremely challenging for participants. Also with reduced rounds all teams may not play each other, resulting in unfair finals rounds.
We regret the disappointment this will bring to those who did want to play, however the safety and well-being of our members must be our uppermost priority. We look forward to seeing you all for a full Summer season circumstances permitting.
Cheers
